Fulton speeds to time trial record at national championships

Tasman sprinter Shaane Fulton has shown further evidence of her progress on day three of the Cycling New Zealand national championships at the Grassroots Trust Velodrome in Cambridge.

Fulton, who had two years out of the sport with injury and surgery, set a new national record on the way to winning the 500m time trail title.

She set the mark in qualifying with a time of 33.478s, which went under the previous record of 33;843 set by teammate Rebecca Petch at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. It also broke the New Zealand Championship record of 34.209s.

Fulton went on to win the final in 33.845.

Southland’s Nick Kergozou again showed his versatility in defending his title in the men’s 100m time trial in 1:01.151 from Kyle Aitken and Liam Cavanagh.

He went on to anchor the New Zealand Development team who were beaten by a slick New Zealand Elite quartet of Aaron Gate, Tom Sexton, George Jackson, Keegan Hornblow in the final of the 4000m team pursuit. They clocked a slick 3:51.356 in qualifying and lowered that to 4:47.266 in the final, as they prepare for the upcoming Nations Cup in Cairo.

The Canterbury Track Cycling combination of Meg Baker, Mya Wolfenden, Sophie Maxwell and Kirsty Watts claimed the women’s 4000m team pursuit in 4:40.933.

Para cycling individual pursuit winners were world champion Anna Taylor (C1-4) in 3:55.496; Ben Westenberg in C4-5 in 4:36.436 and Devon Briggs 3:35.197 in C1-3.

The championships continue until Thursday.
