Fortunes did not favour national champion Lochlan Brown in his first UCI MTB Eliminator World Championships in Germany this weekend.

The New Zealander snapped his chain in the opening qualifying race at the championships in Aalen, near Stuttgart.

It meant his race day was over basically before it started in the urban-based sprint competition.

Fellow kiwis Jess Manchester and Amelie Mackay both qualified and made it through to the quarterfinals, finishing 13th and 14th overall respectively.

Italian Gaia Tormena claimed her fifth women’s world title while Dutch rider Jeroen van Eck claimed his first men’s championship.

Brown finished seventh overall in the World Cup standings in his first season on the circuit.

Finals:

Men: Jeroen van Eck (NED) Jakob Klemencic (SLO) 2, Simon Gegenheimer (GER) 3.

Women: Gaia Tormena (ITA) 1, Lia Schrievers (GER) 2, Marion Fromberger (GER) 3.
