New Zealand, with the box ticked on qualifying, have only three cyclists competing in the final Nations Cup track event in Canada this week.
European-based road professionals Corbin Strong and Michaela Drummond are joined by sprinter Callum Saunders for the four-day event at Milton starting tomorrow (NZ time).
Cycling New Zealand high performance director, Ryan Hollows said the outstanding performances in the two earlier Nations Cup competitions in Jakarta and Cairo had confirmed rankings for the upcoming, all-important world championships in Glasgow.
Strong and Drummond will get key racing experience against robust opposition at Milton, while Saunders will look to secure more qualifying points in sprint competition.
Strong, who rides for the powerful Israel Premier-Tech team, has been in imposing form on the road with a third and fourth placings in the recent Volta Catalunya WorldTour stage race. He is a former points race world champion on the track and last year won gold in the scratch race at the Commonwealth Games and silver in the elimination at the worlds in France, on the same track to be used for the Paris Olympics.
Drummond has enjoyed a bunch of top-five finishes in professional road events including the WorldTour, and has made an excellent return to the track including the Commonwealth Games silver in the team pursuit, where she was a former world champion before moving to the professional road scene in Europe.
Saunders answered a late call-up to the Nations Cup with teammate Sam Dakin injured, making the semifinals of the keirin in Cairo. He will look to develop his experience in a white-hot sprint entry at Milton and will then head to further competition at the Carnival of Speed Grand Prix in Trinidad.
The track world championships will be held in Glasgow in early August, with the New Zealand team to be finalised in the coming weeks ahead of a lead-up camp in Switzerland before heading to Scotland, which will host all 13 world championship disciplines over just 11 days.
