Stewart, Shearman dominate Omnium, as Andrews, Dakin win keirin finals

New Zealand riders continued their successful performances on day three of the UCI Oceania Track Cycling Championships in Brisbane.

There was kiwi domination in endurance racing, with New Zealand riders to the fore in the four-discipline omnium competition in men and women, while there was a double win for kiwi sprinters in the keirin.

World Tour road rider, Campbell Stewart showed he has lost none of his track abilities, winning the men’s Omnium in impressive fashion. He won the opening Scratch race with compatriot Tom Sexton winning the Tempo Race from Keegan Hornblow and Stewart.

Stewart reclaimed the overall lead with a win in the exciting Elimination race from Sexton and closed it out om the Points race to finish ion 147 points with Sexton runner-up on 135, well clear of leading Australian Oliver Bleddyn on 119.

Fellow Manawatu rider, Emily Shearman claimed the women’s Omnium from fellow Paris Olympian Bryony Botha.

Samantha Donnelly started well with a win in the Scratch race from Shearman and Botha, while rising talent, Rylee McMillen continued the kiwi success to win the Tempo race.

Donnelly held off McMillen in the Elimination race, but Shearman showed her class to win the overall with an excellent ride in the deciding Points race to total 124 points from Botha on 118 and Australian Maeve Plouffe on 116 with Donnelly fourth.

Olympic double gold medallist Ellesse Andrews claimed the Keirin final over teammates Olivia King and Shaane Fulton, while Sam Dakin, the sole kiwi in the men’s Keirin final, overcame the odds to win the honours.

The New Zealand junior trio of Benjamin Murphy Alex Schuler and Flynn Underwood took out the Team Sprint title in a slick 45.841s.

The Oceania Track Cycling Championships continue until the weekend.
